Shortly after the release of his Oscar-nominated 2010 documentary Restrepo, combat photographer Tim Hetherington was killed by mortar shells fired by Libyan forces while covering the 2011 Libyan civil war. In Which Way is the Front Line From Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington, colleague and filmmaker Sebastian Junger (co-director of Restrepo) traces Hetherington’s work across the world’s battlefields to reveal how he transcended the boundaries of image-making to become a luminary in his profession.
With an all-start team behind it (we’ve been lucky to have had its brilliant editor, Maya Mumma, on our team from time to time), we are in awe of – but not surprised by – the heart-wrenching beauty of this film. As The Hollywood Reporter writes, “Image after image suggests a gaze of rare compassion and unconventional inspiration. But what made [Hetherington] an exceptional visual artist was his uncommon ability to locate the humanity in any situation, no matter how grim or horrific.”
Which Way is the Front Line From Here, an Official Selection at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, will make its broadcast premiere on HBO Thursday, April 18 at 8pm EST. (Check local listings.)
